Q: How many outlets should I have in each room?

A: Generally, you need to have an outlet every six feet.

This is common in living rooms, bedrooms and dining rooms.

In the kitchen and bathroom, a few more electrical outlets might be required to run all the appliances.

Outlets in living rooms, dining rooms and bedrooms are placed about eighteen inches off the floor.

In kitchens and bathrooms, the outlets are placed under cabinets and behind stoves, dishwashers, refrigerators and compactors.

When deciding how many outlets you need, consider some of the following points:

  • What will be needed and used in each room?
  • Do you need a bigger electrical panel in order to add additional outlets?

For instance:
If you have a computer setup with a printer, router and modem, you will need enough outlets to distribute power. Kitchens need enough outlets to handle counter top appliances as well as your major appliances such as a refrigerator, dishwasher and trash compactor. Window air conditioners need a dedicated outlet.

Take your decorating scheme into consideration.
In the living room or den, you will need a floor outlet if you have tables and lamps that are a distance from a wall outlet. A floor outlet will be more attractive and functional since you won’t have to use an extension cord to reach the wall outlet.

A professional, licensed and insured electrician will help you target your needs and install additional outlets correctly according to the housing codes.
